I get this question almost every week.
A couple is sitting in front of me, one of them a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, the other here on a visitor visa or a work permit that’s running out and they’ve already decided they want to pursue spousal sponsorship in Markham or Richmond Hill. What they haven’t decided is which type.
And almost every time, their first instinct is: “We’re both in Canada, so we do the in-Canada one, right?”
Not necessarily. And right now, in 2026, that assumption is costing families almost a year of their lives together.
The Number Not Everybody Understands
Here’s what IRCC’s own data shows as of May 12, 2026:
- Outland spousal sponsorship: ~16 months
- In-Canada (Inland) spousal sponsorship: ~25 months
Nine months. That’s the gap. In percentage terms, outland is currently 36% faster than inland and that’s not a rounding error or a technicality. That’s the difference between your spouse getting their permanent residence before the end of this year versus well into 2028.
What makes this worth writing about is that many couples in Markham and Richmond Hill, where many of my clients live, don’t realize that you don’t have to be outside Canada to apply outland. Even if your spouse is sitting right here with you, in your home, right now, outland may still be available to you. And at a 36% processing advantage, it’s worth understanding why.
What Actually Separates These Two Streams
Let me be honest about something: “inland” versus “outland” is genuinely confusing terminology. It sounds like it’s purely about geography, where your spouse physically is. And while that’s part of it, the more important distinction is about where the application is processed and decided.
Under inland sponsorship, everything happens within Canada. Your spouse stays here, can apply for an Open Work Permit while waiting, and the case is reviewed and decided by IRCC domestically. The catch: they can’t really leave Canada during this process without serious risk to their application.
Under outland sponsorship, the application is processed through a visa office abroad typically in the applicant’s home country. But here’s the thing a lot of people don’t know: the applicant can still be in Canada for much of the process. They just need to be available to return to their home country if an interview is required, and they can travel freely in and out without jeopardizing their file.
That appeal right, in some cases, matters more than people realize. If an inland application is refused, you have almost no recourse. With outland, you can appeal the decision. For a file with any complexity at all, that backstop is worth something.

Why Is There a 9-Month Gap in the First Place?
Honestly, it comes down to volume and operational backlog.
IRCC processes inland and outland applications through different systems and offices. Right now, the inland stream is carrying more weight than it can handle efficiently. The outland stream, distributed across visa offices around the world is moving faster at this particular moment.
This isn’t a permanent state of affairs. Processing times have shifted before and they’ll shift again. But as of today, the 36% difference is real, it’s significant, and it affects real families. When I’m advising a couple in Richmond Hill where one partner is here on a visitor visa, I’m not going to recommend the slower stream by default just because it’s the more obvious choice.
The Things That Affect Your Timeline Specifically
Choosing outland over inland can recover nearly a year. But the stream you pick is only one piece of the puzzle. Here’s what else shapes how long your particular file takes:
The visa office that handles it. Some offices are faster than others and that’s tied to the country where your spouse is a citizen, the volume of applications that office sees, and their current staffing. It’s not something you control, but it’s worth knowing.
Whether your application is complete on day one. This is the single biggest thing you can control. A file with missing documents, inconsistent dates, or thin relationship evidence gets flagged. IRCC issues a request for more information. Weeks turn into months. I’ve seen clean applications sail through; I’ve seen messy ones stall for reasons that were entirely avoidable.
How clearly your relationship tells its own story. The officer reviewing your file doesn’t know you. They’re reading documents. A relationship that’s been together for seven years across two continents, with photos, letters, financial ties, and travel history, that’s a story that practically tells itself. A relationship that’s real and genuine but poorly documented is a harder sell, even if there’s nothing actually wrong with it.
Mistakes mid-process. Trying to switch streams after you’ve already submitted, submitting the wrong form version, missing a deadline on biometrics or medicals, these are the things that quietly add months to a file. They’re almost always preventable.
What the Outland Spousal Sponsorship Process Looks Like in Markham & Richmond Hill
For clients going the outland route, here’s roughly how the journey unfolds:
- Preparing and submitting the application – This is where the real work happens. Forms, supporting documents, relationship evidence, sponsor financials.
- Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) – IRCC confirms the application is in their system and complete enough to process.
- Sponsor eligibility review – IRCC checks whether you, as the Canadian sponsor, meet the requirements.
- Biometrics and medical exams – Your spouse receives instructions and completes these within a specified window.

In a recent case I handled, we went from submission to final approval in under six months. That’s not typical – but it’s also not impossible when everything is done right from the start.
Is Outland Always the Right Call?
No. And I’d be doing you a disservice if I suggested otherwise.
There are real situations where inland makes more sense. If your spouse has overstayed their visa or is otherwise out of status in Canada, leaving the country to apply outland isn’t a realistic option, they’d need to leave and might face consequences re-entering. In that case, inland sponsorship exists precisely to give those families a path forward without requiring departure.
If staying together in Canada throughout the process is a non-negotiable priority and the Open Work Permit that inland provides is central to that, then the longer timeline might be worth accepting.
These are judgment calls. There isn’t a formula that spits out the right answer. The most important is to understand your specific situation, your spouse’s current status, your timelines, and what your priorities are.
