How Long Does It Take to Sponsor My Wife to Canada?

By Anne Lui, founder and principal consultant of Hopeway Immigration

Valentine’s Day has a way of making big questions feel unavoidable.

You’re scrolling restaurant menus in Toronto, booking a romantic dinner, and at the same time wondering, “Is it realistic to have my wife in Canada permanently by next Valentine’s Day?”

Let’s talk timelines — honestly, realistically, without the immigration jargon.

The Official IRCC Processing Times  (What the Government Says)

According to IRCC’s guidance as of January 14, 2026:

  • In-Canada spousal sponsorship takes about 21 months
  • Outland (outside Canada) spousal sponsorship takes about 14 months

On paper, that means: If you apply outland, next Valentine’s Day is possible. The good news is, even if your spouse or partner is currently in Canada, you can still choose to submit your sponsorship as an outland application which has a shorter processing time at the moment.

Processing Times Vary Widely

In reality, some applications take longer than the posted averages, and some are approved much faster.

In best case scenarios, like the spousal sponsorship case I handled recently, the processing time could be as short as less than 6 months — from submission to final approval. I attribute the success to solid arguments to address the weaknesses of the case, strong documentation and meticulous follow-up throughout the application process.

The Factors That Actually Affects Processing Time

Your sponsorship timeline varies based on the following factors:

  1. A specific visa office’s workload: Some visa offices move faster than others, depending on the country and their volume of applications.
  2. Application completeness: Missing documents, unclear relationship evidence, or inconsistent answers can lead to back-and-forth and cause delays.
  3. Relationship clarity: Straightforward marriages with strong documentation move faster than complex, long-distance relationships or poorly explained cases.
  4. Mistakes cause delays: Trying to switch between different classes, or making errors can trigger Additional document requests, re-reviews, or long periods of silence

What the Process Looks Like (Month by Month)

To help visualize the journey, here’s a typical outland spousal sponsorship program timeline:

In a standard case, the process includes:

  • Application submission and acknowledgment (AOR)
  • Sponsor eligibility review
  • Medical exams and biometrics
  • Background checks and relationship assessment
  • Eligibility approval and pre-arrival services
  • Final decision and COPR issuance

Each step takes time — and some run in parallel.
